Terrassa Culture and Nature

Terrassa has a rich cultural and artistic heritage. Its medieval heritage consists of the Sant Pere churches ensemble next to Vallparadís Park, where major paleontological discoveries have been made, the Torre del Palau (Palace Tower) and the Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís (Vallparadís Carthusian Monastery Castle). Moving forward in time we come to the period of modernism and industrialisation, when the wool textile sector created what is now a unique industrial heritage in Catalonia.

Just ten minutes away from the city centre, the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Natural Park presides over the Terrassa landscape. The monastery at the summit of La Mola is the most emblematic site on a massif that also features plentiful Neolithic archaeological remains. Then right in the heart of Terrassa is the 3 kilometre long Vallparadís Park, laid out on top of a dry watercourse that runs across the city from north to south and is a first rate cultural, natural and recreational facility. The park has a pool which is turned into a navigable lake in the winter excursions programme.

Camí dels Monjos (Monks' Path)

Ever since the Middle Ages there has been a path which links up the Benedictine monasteries of Sant Cugat and Sant Llorenç del Munt via the towns of Sant Cugat, Sant Quirze, Terrassa and Matadepera. It is 25 kilometres long and ranges in height from 100 metres above sea level in Sant Cugat, to 1,050 metres at the summit of La Mola, where the monastery of Sant Llorenç stands.

Modernism

In the middle of the 19th century, Terrassa was one of the leading cities in the industrial revolution taking place in Catalonia and indeed, Spain. Its textile sector, specialising in wool, was the economic driving force in the city for more than a century. The industrial bourgeoisie fostered cultural movements such as Modernisme and Noucentisme.

Since 2003, Terrassa has hosted the Modernist Fair which in just a few years has become one of the most important tourism events in Catalonia, attracting over one hundred thousand visitors each year in May, for a weekend full of cultural and recreational activities.
